What Happens at the Evaluation?
A psychological evaluation is a structured series of interviews, standardized tests, and questionnaires designed to evaluate your child’s strengths and weaknesses in several areas.
Before meeting with you and your child, we’ll first send you an intake packet of forms and questionnaires. Once you’ve completed and submitted them, we’ll schedule your child’s appointment.
- During this assessment, you may be asked additional questions, and we may observe you working with your child.
- We may also have your child work alone with the psychologist to see how they respond.
- The pediatric psychological evaluation can run anywhere from one to three hours depending on your child’s skills and ability to participate in the assessment.
- At the end of the assessment, the psychologist will discuss the results and answer any questions you may have.
Based on the results, we provide recommendations and a coordinated care plan.
An evaluation provides useful information including the following.
- Testing may identify your child’s individual learning style.
- It may rule in/out or define a diagnosis that would provide additional intervention and support for your child’s overall development and success.
- An evaluation may look at your child’s intelligence, memory, attention, academic achievement skills (i.e., reading, writing, or math), and behavioral, emotional, and social development.
